Gear Guide: Ski Jackets

icepeak ski jackets Welcome to my muse about Ski Jackets, what to look for and how to buy a
Ski Jacket or coat

Ski Jackets

Ski Jackets refer jackets that have the design and features you need for keeping warm and functional in winter snow sports. There are various features you may consider, here we are talking about insulated and non-insulated jackets, waterproof jackets, down ski jackets and coats.

Ski Jackets & Layers

Consider buying a jacket under which you can fit layers of clothing. That way you can keep warm, but as the day progresses you can take layers off to better manage your body temperature.
Start with a good thermal base layer and follow with mid-layers such as fleece pullovers or soft shell jackets.

Waterproof Ski Jackets

Whether you're skiing in France or Scotland ensure your ski jacket has some level of water resistance which is useful in wet snow. Most technical jackets have a degree of waterproofness.

Buy a waterproof ski Jacket and you can also use it as an outdoor walking jacket. Making your investment great value for money.

A waterproof shell jacket, is a jacket without insulation, a waterproof outer jacket like the one you wear for hill-walking. Wear these on cold ski days with layers underneath such as fleece or a soft shell jacket.

Soft shell jackets are windproof and have some level of waterproof-ness. Wear soft shell as your outer jacket on 'warmer' ski days, layer-up on cooler days.
Windproof soft shell jackets are very popular in Europe and Scandinavia for versatile ski wear.

Soft Shell Ski Jackets

Insulated Ski Jackets

Insulated ski jackets may  have synthetic or down/ feather insulation within the jacket to proviced a layer of insulation.

Ski Jacket Features

Consider zips , pockets, glove loops and inner snow/ wind skirt.

Ensure the jacket has enough handy pockets to stash your ski essentials such as hats, gloves, energy bars and MP3. Gloves loops on the arm of the jackets are useful to attach your gloves to, so you don't lose them on the ski lift!

A 'Snow skirt or snow gaiter' is a piece of elasticated fabric on the inside of the jacket which can be fastened to prevent powder snow rising up your jacket. They are also useful for keeping out cold wind on the slopes and in the mountains.

Zips should be easy to handle with gloves on and have 'storm flaps', material which prevents wind, wet snow and rain pushing through the zips.

Men's Ski Jackets

Stylish weatherproof 'shell' jackets with little or no insulation are always popular with men's ski jackets. a vertatile option to use on the hillls and slopes home and away.

Women's Ski Jackets

There are some great colours out this season in women's and ladies ski jackets. There are a couple of options to consider, the quilted down ski jacket or a waterproof ski jacket with synthetic insulation.

Down padded insulation provides good warmth to weight ratio, while synthetic insulation is easy care and warm when wet.

Women's Apres Ski Coat

A long quilted ski coat would be great for apres ski and for winter warmth. Look for one with a water-resistant finish on the fabric. Remember down takes a bit of loooking after, but it's worth it, while synthetic insulation is  easy care and warm when wet.

Happy Warm Skiing.
