SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s is looking to open a food store in Ambleside.

Sainsbury's is exploring several sites around the village.

Ambleside’s town centre and community support manager Paul Holdsworth said: “News like this is bound to generate strong and contrary opinions locally.

“Some people will be delighted at the prospect of a major supermarket like Sainsbury’s arriving in Ambleside - expecting choice, convenience, quality and good prices. Others will be alarmed at the challenge to local independent retailers and the loss of local distinctiveness.

“It might damage established local convenience stores and independent businesses in Ambleside, or add positively to the local retail offer, encouraging more local shopping.

“Hopefully Sainsbury’s plans will only be approved if there is clear evidence of local need. The truth is, big chains are always on the lookout for new markets to capture – Lidl has a stated desire to open a store in Windermere, for instance. Whether we like it or not, our shopping habits continue to change, and as we use supermarkets more and more, that’s what we get more of.”

Tesco opens 9th Dec 2011!
